There are a multitude of factors to consider when you buy a car, but for most people, the degree to which it protects you from an AK-47 round is not on the list. For those who are concerned about armor quality, BMW has announced its new X5 Security Plus. This armored SUV can protect occupants from direct fire from any weapon up to and including the popular AK-47.The market for armored luxury vehicles is small, but reliable. Getting from point A to point B in a regular armored car just wouldn’t do, so a more unassuming luxury sedan is the only way to go. Basically, someone is going to buy them. These vehicles cost three to four times more than the regular non-armored variants, but they look almost identical from the outside. However, it will be quite a bit heavier.
BMW has completely sealed the passenger compartment in steel armor with overlapping sheets of the stuff where body panels meet, as well as at the door gaps. Some potentially vulnerable segments of the car’s structure are also protected by pre-shaped aramid and polyethylene components. If someone takes a shot at the windows, they will find the laminated security glass capable of stopping the rounds without shattering or spraying occupants with glass shrapnel.

Even an expensive armored vehicle like the X5 Security Plus isn’t indestructible — the point is that it keeps you alive long enough to get away. To that end, the car is equipped with super-durable run-flat tires that can handle a few bullet holes with no problem. To power your getaway, the X5 Security Plus has a 330 kW (443 hp) TwinPower turbo V8 engine and all-wheel drive.
BMW didn’t announce an exact price when revealing the X5 Security Plus in Moscow, but it is expected to clock in at nearly $200,000. Hey, no one ever said security was cheap.
